Sunflowers

I have always wanted to plant sunflowers along the fence in my backyard. I have never gotten around to planting seeds in time, but this year is different. I was determined to get them planted this year. I went to Home Depot and bought yellow ones and some mixed ones. The mixed flowers are different colors of sunflowers, like a burgundy color and burgundy/yellow. I also bought a big 'greenhouse' of peat pockets. I think that is what they are called. Anyway, I filled them up this morning, and I am anxiosly waiting on them to sprout! I hope that I am successful with getting them to grow. The trick will be to keep the birds and the squirrels from eating them!! Also, whoever mows my lawn better NOT mow them down!! That is a problem, too. I guess I will have to mow around he fenceline. My mower is on the fritz though, so I am not sure when the yard will even get mowed. haha
I am putting a picture up of the beginning stage of this process. I might post periodically to let you see how things are progressing.

Success!!

I have finally made a lot of progress on my dissertation. I have completed chapters one, two, and three. Well, number three is still a work in progress, but it is turned in! I hope that I am on the right track. It has taken me since the Spring of 2009 to get just this little bit done. I was frozen in time, stuck in a rut, couldn't think past my nose, couldn't concentrate, and just plain gave up writing. I could have, and should have, had all five chapters finished by now!!!!! Time has passed, and my brain is finally working again. I am able to concentrate. Today, my mind was as clear as a bell. Isn't that great! I woke up very early, even though I went to bed late. I was ready to go. Last night, I bought four boxes of Lipton Vegetable mixes at Kroger, in order to make veggie dip (they are hard to find). EVERY packet in those FOUR boxes was OPEN on the sides. Something weird went on in that distribution building. So, I took all 4 boxes back early this morning. I never get out early on a Saturday, but I was out by 10 o'clock on the road to the store. I got there and had an 'up front' parking space, got ready to go in, and then I realized that I did NOT have the receipt! Can you imagine? I was so excited to be out early and getting things done, then I had to go all the way back home for a silly receipt. But, I got back in no time, and the young boy at the customer service place was very nice. So, I felt good, had $6.50 in my pocket, and came on home. Then, I got around to the business of studying and writing. Whew! I feel so good. I am not even confused or dazed like I usually am.
I also finished my book last night called Just Choose Happiness. The last part of the book was about letting the Holy Spirit into our lives. I always enjoy reading about the Holy Spirit. When I was a teenager, or in college, I took a course on the Holy Spirit at our church. It must have been a summertime study or something. Anyway, I really enjoyed it.
So, I am ready to Spring AHEAD tonight. If I hadn't gotten so much great work done today, I would be dreading the change of time. BUT, since I am finished for the quarter, I feel GOOD! Now, let's hope my mentor likes what I had to say and the work is on its way to being accepted.
I hope you all have a tremendous rest of the weekend!! I will actually be able to go outside tomorrow! For the last three weekends, I have been inside, inside, inside, studying and writing and not being able to enjoy the pretty sunshine. Well, tomorrow I will get out and about. I might even wash the dogs again! HA! ;)
Later gators!!

Reading

Well, I have been reading one chapter a night in my book about Just Choose Happiness. It has been nice reading something so positive right before going to sleep each night. I have a hard time concentrating at night on anything written, so it takes me a while to get through one short chapter! Actually, I have a hard time with anything written. It is mostly due to the stroke I had 21 years ago. Usually, I must read the same thing several times before realizing what I just read. Maybe I just have old age ADD!! I am enjoying the book, though.

The weather still tends to be crazy. Each morning, I have to stand outside on what the education world calls, "Duty". Several mornings this past week were so cold that I had to wear two jackets again! It gets pretty cold just standing there in the breeze for about 45 minutes! Then in the afternoons, it is nice like spring. I am keeping my heat on at night in the house, but I still wake up to cool mornings inside. I just do not like to be cold!!

Hopefully, I will get some writing done today on my dissertation. The quarter ends on the 18th, and I want to get something else turned in before it gets too late.
Have a great weekend!

Spring?

Is it spring yet? Mother Nature keeps teasing us, so I am not quite sure if we have finally come to the spring season. It was hot enough yesterday so that I could finally bathe my two dogs! That was something that really needed to be done. The sheepdog is in desperate need of a shave, not a haircut, a complete shave down to the skin! She is all matted up again, and I cannot do anything with her hair...not fur...HAIR! Poor girl, she is really a sweetie pie. Her hair/fur, however, is a different story. It gets in a drastic mess very easily.

Progress has been made on my dissertation. I sent in chapter one to the mentor. It is not a full chapter one, but it is almost complete. I am now working on chapter two and three. So, wish me luck!

I also started using my breathing machine (CPAP) again. I do believe it helps me to think much more clearly. The only problem with it is that the mask hurts my face and leaves dents in my skin. Maybe I can find something to put under the straps of the mask to help soften the connection to my face.

Along with all the dissertations, articles, and books that I am studying, while writing my dissertation, I am also trying to read a book called Just Choose Happiness: A Guide to Joyous Living, by Nell W. Mohney. I cannot seem to find the time to sit down and actually read through more than one chapter at a time, but that might be a good thing. By taking so long to read it, I can keep it in my thoughts! This book is one that is on the United Methodist Women's Reading list. The UMW has a great resource of books, and each year certain ones are picked for us to read. I really do enjoy finding a good one each year.

Something that really stuck out to me in the first part of the book was a reiteration, or restatement, of a quote by St. Augustine.

He said, "Our hearts are restless until they rest in Thee."

She rephrased that to say, "All aspects of our personalities are drawn to wholeness and happiness when Christ is resident within."

Isn't that just awesome!! Those words just HIT ME like a ton of bricks. I wrestle with a loss of happiness and joy, and this book is one more step for me back into the living world and freedom from the darkness.

I also bought the new Prayer Calendar for the Methodist Women. The prayer calendars have the birthdays of all of the missionaries who are serving around the world and in the United States. The calendar also lists the names of many others who are working for our Lord through missions of some type.

The artwork that is used for each month is always created by children. The pictures are always wonderful.

The purpose for the calendars is for people to send birthday cards during the year to some of our people who work in missions. I have always tried to send several throughout the year. I choose to send cards to people who have birthdays on the same day as my children, my parents, and other important people in my life.

My cards have gone to Africa, Asia, Europe, South America, and North America. Maybe I can find someone in Australia this year. I doubt if anyone is in Antarctica, but there may be! haha I might finally round out the continents this year, with my birthday cards! Hopefully, the cards reached the persons to whom they were sent!! I have never received any type of response from the people, so I just assume the cards always got to their locations.

It is time to stop messing around and get back to the process of writing my dissertation and studying. Toodeloo! (Is that how you spell that??!! HA! HA!)

Been away

I have been away from blogging for a while. Time just gets away from doing things you want to do sometimes.
The new year began well. I actually got my decorations down before the end of MARCH!! haha
School has been busy. I am coaching an Odyssey of the Mind team, and the competition is next Saturday. Whew, it will be good when that is over
I am trying to start again on my dissertation, but not much has been accomplished in that arena.
Thankfully, we don't get snow here in Savannah. We did have flurries the day after Christmas, but it was nothing like what so many places have been enduring this winter.
Today's blog will be short and sweet. I am just checking in to see if I still know how to do this! haha

Pictures of Christmas

I am going to put some pictures up from Christmas. I made a little slideshow of them in my previous post, but they turned out really small. This time, I will write about what they are!
I had a visit today from a friend of mine that I knew when I lived in Germany, as a teenager. She brought her dad with her, and he and my daddy had a nice visit. They are both retired Air Force sergeants. We had a great visit, but I forgot to take pictures!!

At this angle, you can see Rachel and Adam's little paper ornaments that they made when they were just little toddlers!

The view from the living room into the dining room. The girls helped get the table ready!

My Family! Adam, Vicky, me, Rachel, and Don!!

Adam, Julia, and Little Dewey, III

Dewilla, Rachel, and Don

Vicky, Adam, Dewilla

Kane, Kate, Susan, Thomas, and Lauren

Adam and Don "boxing" to a video type simulation game, at Rachel's house.

My 1800's desk with Santa and stuff

My buffet with Santas and Lighthouse ornaments

Vicky and Adam showing Rachel's presents - prints to remind them of their Europe trip

And the stockings were hung...Granna made the one on the left, and Saramina made the other two.

Rachel and Don being silly with the hatchet and axe that I gave Don for Christmas. He loves having a fire in the fireplace, and he needed these little tools for chopping the wood!

Daddy and me at Rachel's house on Christmas morning

Can you see the snow??

My checkerboard cake...It actually turned out pretty good! Susan gave me the pans last Christmas, and I found he red/green/white idea on the Wilton website.

Rachel and Don's 12 foot tree!!

My chandelier with my 12 days of Christmas ornaments and two little stockings.

French doors going to the sunroom

The entry to the dining room

My Nativity sets...I love Nativity sets, and I splurged and bought all of the parts to the Willow Tree set, over a period of a couple of years. I also gave a set to Rachel.

The Hooper family - It took us a while to get everyone together, and it was cold outside! We are missing Don and 'big' Lauren, though. William used his tripod and timer. He almost didn't make it back up to the back row to get in the picture!!

Christmas Fun

Christmas, Christmas, Christmas!! It feels like it is still Christmas! Actually, I usually feel more in the Christmas spirit in the days following Christmas Day, than during the days before Christmas Day! The hustle and bustle is gone, and you can just enjoy family and being together. Adam and Vicky were able to come up from Tampa to be with us. They got in around 7:30 on Christmas Eve night. Daddy and I went to Rachel's house to meet them, and we all spent the night together at her house!! That was a lot of fun. On Christmas morning, Rachel and Don went to his dad's house to be with his little brother and sister, and Daddy and I came on home. I had everyone over at my house this year for Christmas dinner, and we had a great time. Rachel helped put up my tree, and I decorated the rest of the house. I actually have kind of a clean house this Christmas, so I was able to do a bit more decorating in the dining room than usual. I like the look, and it will probably stay up for quite a while! Who wants to go up in the attic any old way?? haha My friend Cathy took me to lunch today, as a Christmas present. We went to the Gryphon Tearoom, which is in the old Solomons Drugstore. When I was young, my mamma would take us to this drugstore after dentist appointments for milkshakes! It is now owned by Savannah College of Art and Design and has been turned into a tearoom. Cathy's name is Solomons. Her husband's ancestors actually owned the old Solomons Drugstore. Isn't that interesting! Christmas 2010 has been fun. I have lots of pictures to share. The date on the pictures is not correct. I forgot to fix the date when I put in a new battery. I fiddled with the media player thing-y on the computer and put lots of pictures in a little slideshow. Enjoy!
