Up at TWO AM!!

Why in the world am I up at 2:29 am?? I went to the doctor today to get some relief from this feeling bad thing I've had for a few days, so I guess my sore throat is keeping me up. I also have some other medicine I'm on that has me wired, I think.  I didn't get the cough syrup that was prescribed, because I didn't have a cough. I wonder if it would have helped the sore throat!! Crazy... Anyway, I should be asleep right now. When I usually wake up at night, I go right back to bed. I think I wanted to surf the internet to do some research on something, so I stayed awake. Then, the battery in my keyboard was out, so I couldn't type anything. The batteries are now replaced, and I am still perusing the internet. I hope to get back to sleep soon!

I have had an interesting day...slept till 10:17 because I felt soooo bad!! Sat around the house piddling and flipping channels on the tv... watched my soap opera... piddled...felt so bad I couldn't even think of doing anything much...  My sister came in town...then she talked me into going to the doctor and she drove me there so I would actually go!!! My regular doctor is starting her own practice, and she is in the midst of getting the office set up, so I couldn't go to see her. I just went to an Urgent One place, but I didn't get any real satisfaction...just the stereotypical "upper respiratory" answer that you get when they can't really find out why you feel like mashed potatoes or muddy water!!

So, I'm up at TWO AM and not feeling so grand.  I hope tomorrow will be better!!

Good night...

What day is it, anyway?

Ah, summer.......the time when you really don't know which day it is!!  One day runs into the next day during summer vacation, and it is kind of hard to keep up with the names of them!! Ha!

My friend Cathy came by yesterday, and we went out to a couple of antique stores. Savannah is full of antique stores. We went to lunch first at a little cafe right by our first stop, Cafe 37. This small building used to be an antique store, though. This is the place where one summer I bought my 1930's mahogony dining room table, highboy, and single four poster bed (tht I do not even use anymore). I also bought an English Oak 1800's piece, that I cannot think of what it is called. I keep my Lonaberger baskets on it. I believe it is supposed to have plates displayed on it, so maybe it is a type of cupboard. I also bought 1700 or 1800 desk there that has little inkwell places on it. Supposedly, that piece came from England. These dates are what I was told by the 'very good' saleslady anyway. I say very good, because I bought things I could not afford and things I did not need! So, I do like to go look, but I do not buy things like that anymore. We went to the big yellow house on 37th Street that is full of things. This store is actually very neatly arranged and organized, and it is quite a treat to walk through this old house. The owner even has vintage clothes for sale. As we were walking down the main stairs, on our way out of the front door, we saw that a cat is a 'resident' of the house/store. There is a sign on the door telling you to please not let the cat out, even if IT tells you to!!  We thought that was pretty funny.

Then, I took Cathy to a big house downtown that Don told me about one time. This house is right by Forsyth Park, on Bull Street. It is located on the first square past the park, Monterey Square. This big old mansion is full, and did I say FULL, of antiques!  This house is across the street from the Mercer House, which most people know of as the house from the movie "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. That house used to belong to Johnny Mercer's family. Here is a bit of history about the square. The part in red is about the house of antiques.

In 1847, the Irish Jasper Greens, a Savannah military group, returned from the Mexican war and this name (Monterey) was given to honor one of the battles in that war. All of the buildings on this square except one (the United Way building) are original to the square.

Temple Mickve Israel is here with its museum which is open to the public.

On the Southwest corner, at 3 W. Gordon, is the Noble Hardee House, completed in 1869 as a double house but later converted into a single dwelling

The Mercer House is on this square, as well.  Also on this square is the Oglethorpe Club, built in 1857.  The Pulaski Monument is in the center of Monterey Square.

We did not see a name on this big house of antiques, but I found some information on it after I first posted this blog. I have added that information and a picture of the square right above this paragraph.

Cathy said that she believes this particular house was used in the movie "Something to Talk About", when the ladies all got together for a party, or cards, and they all drank a lot and the main character caused a big stir. The outside of the front of the house is what was in the "shot" of the movie, where all the people were going up the steps.  Anyway, this house was built in the 1800's for a plantation owner, according to the girl working there. She didn't know much else about the house. Cathy remembers going into that house with her mother back in the 70's on a tour of homes. I kind of felt like I had been in that house before, too. Unfortunately, the house has gone to 'pot' and would not be on any tour of homes anymore.

This gigantic house is loaded down with furniture. The house is amazing, really. You go in the bottom floor, which was probably where the kitchen and servant's quarters were. You look around and squeeze through all the furniture, and then you can go out into a 'hidden' garden, which is also full of stuff. Then if you wish, you can climb the first set of stairs and go to what was probably the main floor. It must have been really grand at one time. You come up to what must be the front door, with a HUGE chandelier overhead. To the right, is a big room that looks like it was the dining area, with another beautiful chandelier. To the left, is another huge room that must have been the main living room or great room. I can see the people in there now, just like in an old movie!

We climbed the second set of stairs, which were bigger than the first ones. The first set had small stairs and a simple square type of banister. The second set of stairs were grand with a big, nice banister. More huge rooms were on the third level, just like the second level. There were lots of little rooms in and out of these big rooms, too, on each level. This must have been a sleeping floor. Several gigantic beds were in the various rooms. It kind of looks like some of the original furniture might still be in this house, because the furniture is so huge (just like the house!) On this level, there was a room that must have been a library, because of the built in shelves. It reminded me of one of the rooms in the Biltmore house in North Carolina, just not as large. Each floor had a little outside porch, too, with 'stuff' on it to sell. I cannot imagine how all of this furniture ever got into this house, especially up all the stairs! That is why I think a lot of it must have alread been there.

Then, we actually went up one more level! The very top level must have been an attic, but the rooms were big and could have been a living space. We found a few things throughout the house that told us that this house must have been modernized at one time into apartments, or the owner lived in one section of the house, or something like that. Way in the back of one of the upper level rooms, we found a pretty modern day stove, refrigerator, and sink in a tiny little room. The stove was actually plugged in, because the time on the clock was showing (although it was the wrong time!).

Cathy and I were really taken back in time, as we walked through and through all of the furniture and looked at all of the amazing pieces. There were some portraits on the walls, as well. One instance was kind of funny, actually. When we were on one particular level, like a grand ballroom or something, there was a beautiful secretary that had inlaid pictures. I went over to touch the piece to see if it was original or if someone had put stickers all over it! Anyway, the inlay was real, but it was weird looking pictures of animals, like creepy animals. I cannot tell what types of heads they were, but they kind of looked like wolves or something evil. There were also flower or leaf types of inlays. I told Cathy that this thing looked evil, and she said, "The lady in the picture doesn't look too happy, either." The portrait right over the secretary was of a lady frowning, or giving an evil look like you would see in a horror movie!!  I quickly moved away from that piece of furniture and we sqeezed our way through the rest of that huge room! Actually, at the end of this room is where the little room was with the modern day stove and refrigerator. More furniture was plopped on top of the stove, though!

Every inch or half inch of this place has something in it or on it!!  We had fun, though, looking at everything. If you are ever in Savannah, and you like looking for antiques, you should go to this place. The owner's name is Raskin, and the house is on the corner of Bull Street. Like I said, it is catycorner across the street from the Mercer House. The houses are around a square, Monterey Square, so they are not exactly 'across' from each other. They are both around the same square. Did I say "square" enough times in this paragraph? HA!

Have a great Sunday!!

Meanderings

Today is a day of miracles...I swept AND mopped this house of mine! HAHA!!
I also learned how to make the music from a CD stay on my computer. It is a simple matter of setting it to do that. BUT, who knows unless you are a computer guru????  I asked my son in law about it, and he told me what to do. i thought this would happen automatically. Oh well, I have it fixed now.

The fourth of July came and went with not much excitement. I spent the day baking a cake, making deviled eggs, and cutting up chicken! I put the chicken in barbecue sauce and let it stay in the fridge. We went to my brother's house at six to have a cookout. There were no fireworks this year at our celebration. The kids are all grown up now and old enough now to go out on their own, and the little kids aren't big enough to do anything like that. The medium sized kids were in Tennessee, so there wasn't too much excitement around the house!!  We had baby Dora, little Savannah, little Dewey, and Little Julia. These children all ranged from four months, to two years, to three years, to five years of age. These little ones are really fun to watch, but they couldn't really get into too much trouble!!

I'm going "antiquing" today with my good friend Cathy. It is always fun to go to those kinds of stores, even when you are just looking.

I have only been to the beach once this whole summer, so I really should get there again later this week. Hey, it is Friday already! What am I talking about?? Maybe I can go next week. I also need to make a visit to Tampa to see my son. He is only off one weekend this month, so I'm not sure when I will get there. I am going to my high school reunion at the end of the month. Wow! That is going to be an experience! I bought some new shirts and pants for the occasion, since my regular school clothes are a couple of years old and are not really suitable for summer vacation. Luckily, there were sales on during the times that I actually went to the mall!

There is not really any other news to tell, so I will sign off for now. Have a great day!

Oh, you might like to check out the blog called "Journey to Evan" that is on my blog roll. My friend and co-worker is in China adopting her second son from there. She is keeping us all up to date through her blog, and it is a very heartwarming and interesting 'read'.

Bye for now!

Money Pits

Why does everyhing have to break or need repair at the same time, or around the same time? Money pits...money pits...money pits. I know this title usually goes to a house or something that people buy and have to fix up, but when cars and houses start needing repairs at the same time, I think we can call those money pits. In a matter of a few weeks, I have had air conditioner repairs at the house, car repairs for an overheated car, more repairs today on the tail lights and brake lights on the car, with an expensive part to be ordered for next week...and so it goes......

The summer weather has been nice, and the sunshine is wonderful.  I am enjoying vacation. I had planned on going to the beach again this week, but I haven't made it there. Too many things are happening around here to take a drive down to the beach.

We celebrated my nephew's 16th birthday on Wednesday. We went to lunch at Five Guys Burgers. The burgers are really good, like homemade hamburgers.

Then, we went to Logan's Roadhouse that night. We had a nice time. I ordered a barbecue plate. The chicken and ribs were good, but the pulled pork wasn't so good. Around Savannah, pulled pork barbecue is a staple, and we have some good local barbecue.

I made a cake for him, confetti cake, and iced it. Then, I used some long sour candy things to make a 16 and put sour patch candies around as a border. They liked the candy better than the cake, I think.

My niece put i her order for a sour mountain cake! She wants a mountain cake with a trail made out of the long candy and sour patch soldiers marching down it! ha! She will be 12 in July. For my other niece, I am going to try to make a high school cake, since she will be in the 9th grade this coming year. I may add some softball things, too, because she loves softball and is on the team now.

I have an "order" from my soon to be six year old niece for a Tangled Cake, in August. I have been googling Tangled cakes for a while now, and I think I have an idea on how to make one. I just hope it doesn't topple over!! I found this one online. It is actually from someone's blog about their cakes! She made the tower and house out of rice krispie treats. The rest is actual cake. I do not think mine will be this tall. She says it was over four feet high. I will make mine much shorter.

Later in August, I will post pictures of my Tangled cake. I hope it looks good!
Gotta go for now. Have a great day!!

Ah, Summer

So... what kind of productive things have I done so far this summer? Well...let me see...We all went to the beach Friday...I bought some more cross stich patterns and books that I have no idea WHEN I will get around to using...I took my first Cholesterol pill last night. I have been avoiding that pill for almost 15 years, so I finally caved in, since I have more bad cholesterol than good cholesterol, and I do have a couple of heart conditions, so I thought it might be in my best interest to cave in, since I am not being successful with the diet and exercise thing!...I went to see the musical, The Music Man, at the Children's Theatre with my good friend Cathy Solomons and enjoyed it very much...I went to supper with my sister and brother in law, and Daddy, at Love's Seafood, and they treated us to dinner, after waiting for TWO hours for a table! There was a party of 100 people in the back who had been there since 3 pm and stayed until after 8 pm!! Can you imagine letting people do that to your business on one of your busiest nights - SATURDAY!! There were a LOT of dissatisfied customers that evening...I have been spoiling my Golden Retriever, Page, by allowing her to be a house dog now, rather than an outdoor/indoor dog. She really misses our Lady, and she smells the yard and surroundings all the time looking for her. Page also follows me foot to foot in the house, afraid that I might go away, too, I suppose...I finally figured out how to pin a website on Pinterest without too much hassle. You have to download the PinIt button, first! I have never really been a peruser of Pinterest,  but I do go on there occassionally to see what my daughter, family, and friends have pinned...I have been contemplating my trip to Milwaukee for my Bitburg, Germany High School Reunion and what it is going to be like to see people that I haven't seen or heard of in over FORTY years!!!!...I bought some Cake decorating things from Michael's and A.C. Moore...I bought birthday candle numbers from 0 to 9, so that we will not be without a candle for anyone anymore...I have been anxiously awaiting my order from 31 bags (it will be delivered tomorrow)...I FINALLY found a wagon that I can take to the beach or wherever I need to go and bought it!...I bought two new beach umbrellas and towels, also...I have been trying to 'catch' my soap opera on real-time television, rather than watching it on the computer at night, but I haven't managed to do that yet - maybe it will work out today - Young and the Restless...I have also been trying to blog regularly, rather than once or twice a year!! haha....SO, there is my summer vacation so far. Have a great day!!

The BEACH~~

We took Dora on her first trip to the beach yesterday. She really loved the wind blowing on her face! She smiled, and laughed, and kicked her feet constantly! We know when she is trying to talk, because her legs go round and round, and her arms go flailing around! She is one sweet little girlie! I have two small beach umbrellas that we set up, so that she did not get any sunburns! Rachel laid a towel down in the sand and put Dora on it. She loved the feel of the sand on her back! I have lots of pictures to post, so I will let the pictures tell the story!
Today has been a do-nothing day so far. I have enjoyed just sitting around, messing on the computer, doing nothing, putting up dishes from the kitchen sink that desperately needed to find their home, etc. I made some chicken salad and poured a gingerale. This afternoon, I am going to see the Children's Theatre production of "The Music Man". My friend, Cathy, asked me to go with her. I'm sure it will be fun. I like that musical.
Well, let me get started loading the beach pictures. Have a great Saturday!!
Dora in Grandma's Carseat!

Dora is reading the sunscreen label!

She is such a good baby!

Let's go already!

Squeezing into her bathing suit!

Grandma's new wagon! I've been looking for one for a couple of years. I saw this at Sam's, and I just HAD to buy it!

Sunbathing at the beach!

Giggling away!

I'm such a happy baby! I LOVE the beach!

Sweet Girl!

Summertime

Today is the first Monday of summer vacation. We were out Thursday and Friday, but those two days did not feel like summer. This week will be my first full week of vacation...YEA!!
How did I start out the day? I went to school, of course. HA! We had a walkthrough of our new school building. All of it is not yet ready, but we went through the whole building and saw all of its wonders. Since our other school was way over 50 years old, like me, there were many things that were not up to par. Now, we will have all of the same things as other schools. We are all looking forward to the newness of our site. I have been at this school for 20 years, and for 20 years we have been told that we were getting a new school. Well folks, it is finally HERE! I know that when school starts in August, everything is going to be wonderful, fresh, and new. That thought alone will help us all to be able to go back to work, after a summer break, with a renewed strength and power to begin helping to build little lives into productive and accomplished citizens.
Wish us luck!
